Born in Wisconsin, Martin joined the Navy at the young age of 18 in 1984. After Boot Camp and Service Schools, he received orders to San Diego, California. After serving on eight different ships, the last one being the USS PELELIU (LHA 5), he made the choice to make Imperial Beach Home!
After serving 25 years in the Navy and achieving the rank of Command Master Chief, Mattes retired and went into the logistics business. After retiring from the government contracting world, he tried to be fully retired and moved to North Las Vegas with his beautiful bride, Vanessa Mattes. When the opportunity came up to manage the Ye Olde Plank Inn in the fall of 2019, he rose to the occasion. After managing the iconic "Plank" for 2 years, he and his business partner, Tony Cornett, purchased the Ye Olde Plank Inn in June of 2022.
Currently, Marty is the President of the Imperial Beach Chamber of Commerce, Charter President of the Imperial Beach Lions Club, member of the Imperial Beach VFW Post 5477 and Imperial Beach Fleet Reserve and strong supporter of the Mar Vista Naval Junior Officer Training Program and Imperial Beach Boys and Girls Club. In addition, he has been involved with the Navy Community and is a proud sponsor of the Sailor of the Year Program for Commander, Naval Air Forces, Pacific for over a decade.
He lives with his wife Vanessa Mattes and has four children and four Grand Children.
Marty is deeply committed to the Imperial Beach community, working to strengthen local businesses, support military families, and create opportunities for residents to thrive. As the President of the Imperial Beach Chamber of Commerce and a proud supporter of local organizations like the Boys & Girls Club and the Mar Vista Naval Junior Officer Training Program, Marty strives to uplift every corner of the community. His dedication is rooted in a belief that strong communities are built on collaboration, compassion, and a commitment to the everyday hero.
As a local business owner and co-owner of Ye Olde Plank Inn, Marty understands the importance of fostering a thriving business environment in Imperial Beach. His leadership as President of the Imperial Beach Chamber of Commerce reflects his commitment to supporting small businesses and encouraging economic growth in the community. Marty believes in empowering local entrepreneurs, creating job opportunities, and ensuring that businesses have the resources they need to succeed, making Imperial Beach a great place to live and work.
As a Navy veteran who served 25 years and retired as Command Master Chief, Marty’s dedication to the military runs deep. His experience shaped his leadership, and he remains a strong advocate for military families in Imperial Beach. Marty actively supports veteran organizations like the Imperial Beach VFW Post 5477 and the Sailor of the Year Program. His commitment to those who serve is unwavering, and he works to ensure they receive the recognition and support they deserve within the community.
